EVANGELIUM E OMELIA\HOMILY:
Luc 16:19-31
Gospel
Luke 16:19-31
At that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees, There was a certain rich man who used to clothe himself in purple and fine linen, and who feasted every day in splendid fashion. And there was a certain poor man, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. And it came to pass that the poor man died and was borne away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; but the rich man also died and was buried in hell. And lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime have received good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now here he is comforted whereas you are tormented. And besides all that, between us and you a great gulf is fixed, so that they who wish to pass over from this side to you cannot, and they cannot pass from your side to us.’ And he said, ‘Then, father, I beseech you to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they too come into this place of torments.’ And Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets: let them hearken to them.’ But he answered, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hearken to Moses and the Prophets, they will not believe even if someone rises from the dead.’
DALL’OMELIA DI (FROM THE HOMILY BY) DON ENRICO RONCAGLIA – GIOVEDI 9 MARZO 2023 ORE 18.00:
DALL’OMELIA DI DON ENRICO RONCAGLIA (**,1) (IN PREP.)
3 Reg 17:8-16

FROM THE HOMILY BY DON ENRICO RONCAGLIA (**,1) (IN PREP.)
3 Regs 17:8-16 In those days the word of the Lord was directed to Elia Thesbite with these words: «Get up and go to Sarepta of the Sidonians, where you will dwell. Here you are! I ordered a widow there to feed you.” Elijah got up and went to Sarepta. Arriving at the city gate, he saw in front of him a widow who was collecting wood, he called her and said to her: “Please, give me a little water in a vase to drink”. While she was going to get it, she shouted after her and said: “Bring me, please, also a loaf of bread in your hands.”
Matt 23:1-12 At that time: Jesus turning to the crowds and the disciples, said: «The Scribes and the Pharisees are seated on the chair of Moses. So observe and do everything they tell you; but do not do as they do, for they say and do not. In fact, they tie heavy and unbearable weights and put them on people’s backs; but they don’t even want to move them with a finger. Then they do all their work to be seen: therefore they wear the phylacteries wider, the fringes longer; and they love the first places in the banquets, the first seats in the synagogues and greetings in the squares and to be called masters by the people. But you do not want to be called masters; because only one is your Master, you are all brothers. Nor do you call any father on earth; because only one is your Father, the heavenly one. Nor let yourself be called guides; because your only guide is Christ. Whoever is greatest among you shall be your minister. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
The Gospel is very clear. As Jesus announces that he is going to die in Jerusalem, the mother of James and John asks for the best places for them. It is a strong contrast between God’s mercy and the mother’s ambition for her sons James and John. This kind of ambition is a plague on our humanity: looking for the best places! While instead we have to ask ourselves the problem: what can we do for Jesus Christ!
Praised be Jesus Christ! Always be praised!
