At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. And having agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And about the third hour, he went out and saw others standing in the market place idle; and he said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.’ So they went. And again he went out about the sixth, and about the ninth hour, and did as before. But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing about and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no man has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’ But when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.’ Now when they of the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius. And when the first in their term came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also received each his denarius. And on receiving it, they began to murmur against the householder, saying, ‘These last have worked a single hour, and you have put them on a level with us, who have borne the burden of the day’s heat.’ But answering one of them, he said, ‘Friend, I do you no injustice; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go; I choose to give to this last even as to you. Have I not a right to do what I choose? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

1 Cor 9:24-27; 10:1-5
Non voglio infatti che voi ignoriate, o fratelli, come i nostri padri furono tutti sotto la nuvola, e tutti passarono per il mare, e tutti furono battezzati in Mosè, nella nube e nel mare: e tutti mangiarono dello stesso cibo spirituale, e tutti bevettero la stessa bevanda spirituale e bevevano della pietra spirituale che li accompagnava: e quella pietra era il Cristo: eppure Iddio non fu contento della maggior parte di essi.

Circa all’ora undicesima uscì ancora, e ne trovò altri, e disse loro: Perché state qui tutto il giorno in ozio? Quelli risposero: Perché nessuno ci ha presi. Ed egli disse loro: Andate anche voi nella mia vigna.
Oggi ricordiamo Santa Giuliana di Nicomedia, Vergine e martire, quella che spaventò il demonio. Secondo il martirologio romano, visse a Nicomédia (come S. Giorgio) sotto l’Imperatore Massimiàno. Per la sua fede, fu prima gravemente battuta da Africàno suo padre, quindi in vari modi tormentata dal Prefetto Evilàsio, col quale aveva ricusato di maritarsi, e poi gettata in carcere, combattè apertamente col demonio e finalmente, avendo superato le fiamme ed una caldaia bollente, compì il martirio con la decapitazione. Il suo corpo fu poi trasportato a Cuma, in Campània.
La liturgia ci ripropone le letture di domenica. E’ la chiama nella vigna del Signore. Non tutti vengono chiamati alla prima ora (l’infanzia). Non a tutti pero la chiamata arriva alla stessa eta’. Puo’ avvenire anche al tramonto della vita (l’undicesima ora). Ma l’ora non ha importanza (e’ un ragionamento umano), perche per Dio non e’ importante l’ora ma la risposta che noi diamo. La risposta pronta e decisa viene premiata.
Come con gli apostoli i quali erano gia’ persone mature. Occorre seguire la chiamata, grazie allo Spirito Santo e i consigli dei nostri fratelli!
Sia lodato Gesu Cristo! Sempre sia lodato!

For I do not want you to be ignorant, O brothers, how our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses, into the cloud and into the sea: and all ate of the same spiritual food, and all they drank the same spiritual drink and drank of the spiritual stone that accompanied them: and that stone was the Christ: yet God was not happy with most of them.

About the eleventh hour he went out again, and found others, and said to them: Why are you here all day idle? They replied: Because no one has taken us. And he said to them, You also go into my vineyard.
Today we remember Saint Juliana of Nicomedia, Virgin and martyr, the one who frightened the devil. According to the Roman martyrology, he lived in Nicomédia (like St. George) under the Emperor Maximian. For her faith, she was first seriously beaten by her father Africàno, then in various ways tormented by the Prefect Evilàsio, with whom she had refused to marry, and then thrown into prison, she fought openly with the devil and finally, having overcome the flames and a boiler hot, he performed martyrdom with beheading. His body was then transported to Cuma, in Campània.Later they were converted to Christianity by Bishop Apollonio and suffered martyrdom between 120 and 134, for not wanting to sacrifice to the gods.

But the hour does not matter (it is a human reasoning), because for God it is not the hour but the answer we give. The prompt and decisive answer is rewarded.
As with the apostles who were already mature people.
We must follow the call, thanks to the Holy Spirit and the advice of our brothers!
