In that time Jesus said to His disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. DALL’OMELIA DI DON ENRICO RONCAGLIA (*)
Ci troviamo oggi a festeggiare un altro dottore della Chiesa, uno dei piu’ grandi! Si tratta infatti di
Francesco di Sales (in francese François de Sales; Thorens-Glières, 21 agosto 1567 – Lione, 28 dicembre 1622) è stato un vescovo cattolico francese. Francesco fu il figlio primogenito del signore di Boisy, nobile di antica famiglia savoiarda, e ricevette una raffinata educazione. Il padre, che voleva per lui una carriera giuridica, lo mandò all’Università di Padova, dove Francesco si laureò, ma dove decise di divenire sacerdote. Ordinato il 18 dicembre 1593, fu inviato nella regione del Chiablese, dominata dal Calvinismo e si dedicò soprattutto alla predicazione, prediligendo il metodo del dialogo: inventò i cosiddetti «manifesti», che permettevano di raggiungere anche i fedeli più lontani.
È stato proclamato santo nel 1665 da papa Alessandro VII ed è uno dei dottori della Chiesa.
Fu vescovo di Ginevra allora dominata dall’eresia protestante. In quella situazione difficile domino’ con il suo esempio. Ebbe grandissimo successo nel proselitismo.Il suo era un insegnamento basato sulla dottrina. Francesco era molto fermo, ma era anche molto paziente e devoto al Sacro Cuore di Gesu’.
Fondo’ l’ordine della visitazione. Al suo nome si sono ispirate parecchie congregazioni, tra le quali la più celebre è indubbiamente la Famiglia Salesiana fondata il 18 Dicembre 1859 da San Giovanni Bosco, la cui attenzione si rivolge più che altro alla crescita e all’educazione delle giovani generazioni, con un’attenzione tutta particolare alla cura dei figli delle classi meno abbienti.
Francesco Saverio sia anche ispirazione per tutti noi, sia per il suo insegnamento della dottrina che per la sua fede incrollabile!

Today we find ourselves celebrating another Doctor of the Church, one of the greatest! It is in fact Francis de Sales (in French François de Sales; Thorens-Glières, 21 August 1567 – Lyon, 28 December 1622) was a French Catholic bishop.
Francis was the eldest son of the lord of Boisy, a noble from an ancient Savoyard family, and received a refined education. His father, who wanted a legal career for him, sent him to the University of Padua, where Francesco graduated, but where he decided to become a priest. Ordained on 18 December 1593, he was sent to the region of Chiablese, dominated by Calvinism and devoted himself above all to preaching, preferring the method of dialogue: he invented the so-called “manifestos”, which made it possible to reach even the most distant faithful.
He was proclaimed a saint in 1665 by Pope Alexander VII and is one of the doctors of the Church.
He was bishop of Geneva then dominated by the Protestant heresy. In that difficult situation he dominated with his example. He was extremely successful in proselytizing, his teaching was based on doctrine.
Francis was very firm, but he was also very patient and devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The order of the visitation was founded by him. Several congregations have been inspired by his name, among which the most famous is undoubtedly the Salesian Family founded on 18 December 1859 by Saint John Bosco, whose attention is directed more than anything else to the growth and education of the younger generations, with a special attention to the care of the children of the less well-off classes.
May Francis de Sales may also be an inspiration for all of us, both for his teaching of the doctrine and for his unshakable faith!
