La Vocazione di San Matteo è un dipinto realizzato tra il 1599 ed il 1600 dal pittoreitaliano Michelangelo Merisi detto Caravaggio, ispirato all’episodio raccontato in Matteo 9,9-13. Si trova nella Cappella Contarelli, nella chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi a Roma.

Et vidéntes pharisæi, dicébant discípulis eius: Quare cum publicánis et peccatóribus mánducat Magíster vester? At Iesus áudiens, ait: Non est opus valéntibus médicus, sed male habéntibus. Eúntes autem díscite, quid est: Misericórdiam volo, et non sacrifícium. Non enim veni vocáre iustos, sed peccatóres.

And it came to pass as He was at table in the house, that, behold, many publicans and sinners came to the table with Jesus and His disciples. And the Pharisees seeing it, said to His disciples, Why does your Master eat with publicans and sinners? But Jesus heard it, and said, It is not the healthy who need a physician, but they who are sick. But go, and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call sinners, not the just.

Ezech 1:10-14
Ecco l’aspetto di ciascuno dei quattro esseri viventi: tutti e quattro avevano faccia di uomo e di leone alla loro destra; tutti e quattro avevano faccia di bove a sinistra; al disopra di tutti e quattro v’era la faccia dell’aquila. Così era il loro aspetto. Le loro ali si stendevano in alto, due ali di ciascuno si univano, e due coprivano il corpo. Ciascuno di essi andava in direzione della sua faccia, andavano dove portava l’impeto dello spirito, e nel camminare non si volgevano indietro. In quanto alla forma di questi esseri viventi, il loro aspetto era come fuoco di carboni ardenti e come lampade accese. Ecco quanto vedevo scorrere nel mezzo di quei viventi: splendore di fuoco, e dal fuoco uscir folgori. Ed essi andavano e venivano a somiglianza di folgori lampeggianti.

In quel tempo, Gesù vide un uomo chiamato Matteo, seduto al banco dei gabellieri, e gli disse: «Seguimi». Ed egli, alzatosi, lo seguì. E avvenne che mentre egli era in casa di lui a mensa, vennero molti pubblicani e peccatori a mettersi a tavola con Gesù e coi suoi discepoli. E vedendo ciò i Farisei dicevano ai suoi discepoli: «Perché mangia coi pubblicani e coi peccatori il vostro Maestro?». E Gesù, avendo udito, disse: «Non i sani han bisogno del medico, ma i malati. Andate a imparare che significhi: “Misericordia voglio e non sacrificio”. Perché io non sono venuto a chiamare i giusti, ma i peccatori».
I quattro esseri viventi descritti dal profeta Ezechiele si muovono veloci come fulmini. Cosa rappresentano? Assomigliano ai quattro esseri viventi dell’Apocalisse!
Gesu’ vede al banco della dogana Matteo e gli ordina di seguirlo alla mensa assieme ai farisei. Farisei che lo criticano per questo Gesu’ comprendendo i loro pensieri, afferma che Lui e’ giunto per salvare i peccatori, non i giusti che compiono sacrifici nel tempio.
Gesu’ ha pieta’ per i peccatori. Pone grande importanza nella misericordia e l’amore (inteso come agape). L’apostolato e’ compito di grande carita. Impariamo dagli apostoli e dai martiri!
Sia lodato Gesu’ Cristo! Sempre sia lodato!

Ezek 1:10-14
The faces of the living creatures were like this: each of the four had the face of a man, but on the right side was the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox, and finally each had the face of an eagle. Their faces and their wings looked out on all their four sides; each had two wings spread out above so that they touched one another’s, while the other two wings of each covered his body. Each went straight forward; wherever the spirit wished to go, there they went; they did not turn when they moved. In among the living creatures something like burning coals of fire could be seen; they seemed like torches, moving to and fro among the living creatures. The fire gleamed, and from it came forth flashes of lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned like flashes of lightning.

The four living beings described by the prophet Ezekiel move as fast as lightning. What do they represent? They resemble the four living beings of the Apocalypse! Jesus sees Matthew at the customs counter and orders him to follow him to the table together with the Pharisees. Pharisees who criticize him for this Jesus, understanding their thoughts, states that He has come to save sinners, not the righteous who make sacrifices in the temple. Jesus has mercy on sinners. It places great importance on mercy and love (understood as agape). The apostolate is a task of great charity. Let us learn from the apostles and martyrs!
