Matt 16:24-27
In illo témpore: Dixit Iesus discípulis suis: Si quis vult post me veníre, ábneget semetípsum, et tollat crucem suam, et sequátur me. Qui enim volúerit ánimam suam salvam fácere, perdet eam: qui autem perdíderit ánimam suam propter me, invéniet eam. Quid enim prodest hómini, si mundum univérsum lucrétur, ánimæ vero suæ detriméntum patiátur? Aut quam dabit homo commutatiónem pro ánima sua? Fílius enim hóminis ventúrus est in glória Patris sui cum Angelis suis: et tunc reddet unicuíque secúndum ópera eius.

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For he who would save his life will lose it; but he who loses his life for My sake will find it. For what does it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, but suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will render to everyone according to His conduct.

Ti voglio lodare, o Signore mio Re: ti voglio glorificare, o Dio mio salvatore. Voglio celebrare il tuo nome, o rifugio della mia vita, perché hai riscattata da morte la mia anima; hai preservato il mio corpo dalla tomba e il mio piede hai salvato dal potere d’inferno. Mi hai liberato dal flagello della lingua e dal labbro dei pronti a mentire; e in faccia ai miei avversari ti sei fatto mio protettore. E nella tua grande misericordia mi hai liberato da leoni ruggenti pronti a divorarmi, dalle mani di chi cercava l’anima mia. Da molte angustie mi hai scampato: dalle spire di fiamma avvolgente e dall’incendio di fuoco indomato; dal seno di cupo abisso, dalle labbra maldicenti, dagli orditori di menzogne e dalla freccia di lingua fraudolenta. Fino alla morte l’anima mia benedirà il Signore; poiché Tu liberi quelli che ti aspettano con pazienza, e li salvi dal potere delle nazioni.

In quel tempo Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: «Chi vuol venire dietro a me, rinunzi a se stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua. Poiché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita, la perderà e chi sacrificherà la sua vita, per amor mio, la troverà. Infatti, che giova all’uomo guadagnare tutto il mondo, se poi perde l’anima? oppure che darà l’uomo in cambio dell’anima sua? Poiché il Figlio dell’uomo verrà nella gloria del Padre suo con i suoi Angeli e allora renderà a ciascuno secondo il suo operato».
San Lordenzo e’ stato sempre un santo molto venerato. Ha anche una vigilia che avviene oggi.
Lorenzo e’ un diacono romano ucciso per la sua testimonianza eroica. Serviva soprattutto i poveri della Chiesa.
Il Vangelo fi oggi riguarda infatti la croce che tutti noi dobbiamo portare se vogliamo salvarci e giungere in paradiso. La ricompensa e’ certa: la promette Gesu’!
Sia lodato Gesu’ Cristo! Sempre sia lodato!

Ecclus 51:1-8, 12
I will give You thanks, O Lord, O King; I will praise You, O God my Saviour! I will make known Your name; for You have been my helper and protector, and have preserved my body from destruction, from the scourge of a slanderous tongue, and from lips that went over to falsehood; and in the sight of those who stood by You have been my helper. And You have delivered me, according to the multitude of the mercy of Your name, from those who did roar, prepared to devour; from the power of those who sought my life, and from the gates of afflictions which compassed me about; from the oppression of the flames which hemmed me in on every side, and in the midst of the fire I was not burnt; from the deep belly of the nether world, and from an unclean tongue, and from lying words, from an unjust king, and from dishonest tongues. My soul shall praise the Lord even to death; because You, O Lord our God, save those who take refuge in You, and rescue them out of the hands of the nations.

San Lordenzo has always been a very revered saint. It also has a vigil that happens today. Lorenzo is a Roman deacon killed for his heroic testimony. Above all, he served the poor of the Church.
Indeed, today’s Gospel concerns the cross that we all must carry if we want to be saved and reach heaven. The reward is certain: Jesus promises it!
